Isabel is an artist whose practice is grounded in experiences of the body, grappling with and resisting assignments of value, binary categorization, and diagnoses. Through painting, herbalism, zine making, and community engagement, Isabel draws upon Western and Eastern perspectives in both concept and form. They echo the fluidity of Qi, body, and medicine into their technique, translating movements of ink and watercolor on paper into figurative oil paintings on aluminum. Isabel sits with the presence of pigment in plant and human tissues as opportunities to understand rather than shame. They incorporate paintings, illustration, and herbs into installations that honor paths of blood, resilience, and anguish. By connecting shared experiences of shame and wonder in bodily fluids and agricultural foods, Isabel invites us to reflect on binary views and moral hysteria surrounding function, gender, and disorder.
